About the Gas Price Tracker

The Gas Price Tracker shows live U.S. regular-gasoline retail averages by state, the national average, diesel averages, plus the underlying commodity prices — RBOB gasoline futures and WTI crude — that drive retail pricing 4–6 weeks downstream. A state heat-map and ranked table surface the highest and lowest-cost states. A built-in calculator converts state prices to per-fill-up and per-month spend at your MPG and miles-driven inputs.

It is built for commuters checking whether their state is above or below the national average, road-trippers planning a multi-state route and pre-fueling in the cheaper state, fleet managers tracking weekly cost moves, journalists writing energy-market explainers, and anyone wanting to see why pump prices lag oil-price moves by weeks (the answer: refining, distribution, state taxes, and seasonal blend changes).

State and national price data is pulled live from cached AAA retail-average feeds on EvvyTools’ own server (refreshed daily); commodity prices come from EIA (Energy Information Administration) cached data. Once the dashboard loads, calculator math and state comparisons run locally in your browser — no further network calls, and no user inputs (your state selection, mileage, MPG) are transmitted off your device.

Retail averages are exactly that — averages. Local prices vary 20–50 cents/gallon between stations on the same block due to brand contracts, lease terms, real-estate cost, and competitive geography. State averages also mask wide regional spread (California’s coastal cities vs Central Valley, for example). For the actual cheapest pump near you, use GasBuddy on the ground — this dashboard is for macro tracking, planning, and seeing how state taxes and refining capacity drive structural cost differences.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where does the gas price data come from?

State-level retail gasoline prices are sourced from AAA, which surveys roughly 130,000 fueling stations every day via credit-card swipes and direct data feeds (in partnership with OPIS and Wright Express). Crude oil prices come from live futures markets (NYMEX for WTI, ICE for Brent).

How often is the data updated?

AAA publishes new daily state averages around 10:15 AM Eastern each day. Our cron fetches updates hourly and caches them, so prices on this page reflect today's official daily average. Crude oil prices in the live ticker refresh every minute during trading hours.

Why is my state's price different from what I see at the pump?

This is a statewide average across all grades and all stations. Individual stations vary significantly by brand, location (highway exits are usually more), and time of week (Tuesday-Wednesday are historically cheapest).

Why is gas so expensive right now?

The primary driver since late February 2026 is the US-Iran conflict. With the Strait of Hormuz effectively closed, roughly 20% of the world's oil supply has been disrupted. Brent crude surged from around $72/barrel pre-war to well over $100 at peak. Gas prices typically follow crude with a 2–3 week lag.

Can I embed this on my site?

Yes — click the Embed button in the action bar. You can also hit our JSON endpoint at /api/gas-prices/live.php for your own widgets. Attribution to EvvyTools is appreciated but not required.

Why don't you show diesel and premium prices by state?

AAA publishes daily state averages for regular gasoline only. The national diesel average is shown in the ticker. For state-level diesel and premium breakdowns, EIA publishes weekly series — we may add those in a future update.
