Typing tests are everywhere; honest ones are not. How the Typing Speed Test Works

Pick a duration, click the stage, and type the words as they appear — the clock starts on your first keystroke, mistakes are marked as you make them, and backspace fixes them. When time runs out you get four numbers: net WPM (the headline, with uncorrected errors deducted at one word each), raw WPM, accuracy, and consistency. The words are drawn from the most frequent words in English, which is the fairest common ground for a speed measurement.

Net Versus Raw: Why the Deduction Exists

Raw speed counts every keystroke as progress; net speed asks what you actually produced. The convention — five characters to the word, one word deducted per uncorrected error — dates from typewriter-era testing and survives because it resists gaming: type garbage at 120 strokes a minute and the net figure says what your output was worth. Corrected errors carry their own built-in penalty, the time you spent on backspace.

Consistency Is the Underrated Number

Two typists can average 60 WPM — one holding a steady rhythm, one alternating sprints and stalls. The consistency score separates them: speed is sampled in 5-second windows, and the score is 100% minus the coefficient of variation of those samples. Smooth typing survives fatigue, transfers to real work, and improves faster with practice; bursty typing plateaus. If your consistency sits below 60% while your speed looks fine, rhythm — not finger speed — is the thing to train.

How is WPM calculated?

By the standard convention: a "word" is five characters, spaces included, so raw WPM is characters typed divided by five, divided by minutes elapsed. Net WPM — the number this tool leads with — subtracts one word for every uncorrected error, which is why it is the honest figure: hammering wrong letters at speed should not count as typing. Errors you fix with backspace cost you time but not the penalty.

What is a good typing speed?

The largest public dataset — 168,000 volunteers analysed by Dhakal, Feit, Kristensson and Oulasvirta in 2018 — averaged about 52 words per minute. Office work sits comfortably at 40–60; touch-typists commonly reach 70–90; competitive typists exceed 120. One caveat this page states rather than hides: people who take online typing tests are a self-selected fast crowd, so "average" here is above the true population average.

What does the consistency score mean?

Your speed is sampled in 5-second windows through the test, and consistency is 100% minus the coefficient of variation (the standard deviation of those window speeds divided by their mean). A steady 60 WPM throughout scores near 100%; sprint-and-stall typing scores low even when the average is identical. It matters because bursty typing collapses first under fatigue or pressure — smoothness is what transfers to real work.

Why do my results differ between typing sites?

Word difficulty and error accounting. Tests built on the commonest English words (this one draws from the most frequent words in the language) run faster than tests with punctuation, capitals or rare words; and some sites report raw speed while this one leads with net. Compare yourself to yourself, on one test, over time — the subscriber progress chart exists for exactly that.

Does what I type leave my browser?

No. The test, the statistics and the heatmap all run locally, and results are stored only in this browser if you are a subscriber using progress tracking. The only thing that ever leaves is the share-card URL if you choose to share your score — three numbers, nothing else.
