The Matrix Workbench is a full linear-algebra calculator: determinant, inverse, eigenvalues + eigenvectors, RREF (reduced row-echelon form), rank, transpose, LU decomposition, and Ax = b solver. Supports matrices up to 10×10, accepts cell-by-cell entry or CSV paste, and renders results with proper matrix formatting.

It is built for linear-algebra students checking homework results without paying for a CAS, engineers running quick eigenvalue analyses (vibration modes, PCA, control-system stability), data-science learners exploring matrix decompositions before reaching for NumPy, and educators generating worked examples on the fly during a lecture.

How to Use the Matrix Workbench

Determinant and What It Tells You Geometrically

The determinant of an n×n matrix is the signed n-dimensional volume of the parallelepiped spanned by its columns. Det = 0 means the columns are coplanar (or worse) — the transformation flattens space, losing information. The sign encodes orientation: positive preserves handedness, negative flips it. For square matrices, determinant equals zero is equivalent to no inverse.

The Inverse and Why Some Matrices Lack One

A square matrix is invertible iff its determinant is non-zero, equivalently iff its rank equals n. The inverse undoes the transformation: A−1A = I. The tool computes it by augmented Gauss-Jordan on [A | I][I | A−1] with partial pivoting for numerical stability. Near-singular matrices produce numerically unreliable inverses — the condition number warns you.

Eigenvalues, Eigenvectors, and the Spectral View

Eigenvalues capture the “principal stretches” of a linear transformation: directions along which the map acts purely by scaling. For symmetric matrices, all eigenvalues are real and eigenvectors are orthogonal — the foundation of PCA, modal analysis, and quadratic-form classification. The tool computes them via the QR algorithm with Wilkinson shifts after Hessenberg reduction, accurate to roughly 10 significant digits for well-conditioned 10×10 matrices.

Row-Echelon vs. Reduced Row-Echelon Form

Row-echelon form has zeros below each pivot. Reduced row-echelon (RREF) is unique: it adds zeros above each pivot and scales pivots to one. Two matrices have the same row space iff they share the same RREF, which is why RREF is the canonical fingerprint of a matrix’s row content. Pivot positions reveal the linearly-independent columns; non-pivot columns are linear combinations of pivot columns.

LU vs. QR vs. SVD — When to Use Which Factorization

  • LU — cheapest for solving Ax = b repeatedly with different b vectors.
  • QR — numerically stable for least-squares and eigenvalue iteration.
  • SVD — gold standard, exposes rank, condition number, pseudoinverse, principal components.

LU is built into this tool. For SVD-driven problems (least squares, low-rank approximation), a dedicated tool is in the queue.

Solving Linear Systems in Practice

Ax = b appears everywhere: structural finite-element stiffness, economic input-output models, machine-learning gradient steps, electrical Kirchhoff equations. Unique solution exists iff A is invertible. Otherwise the tool reports “no unique solution” or “no solution” based on the augmented-matrix rank check.

Frequently Asked Questions

What does it mean for a matrix to be singular?

A singular matrix has determinant zero and no inverse. Its columns are linearly dependent — at least one column is a linear combination of the others. Singular matrices indicate non-unique or no solution to Ax = b.

What is an eigenvalue?

An eigenvalue lambda of matrix A is a scalar such that A times v equals lambda times v for some nonzero eigenvector v. Eigenvalues describe how a transformation stretches or compresses along its principal directions; central to PCA, vibrations, and stability analysis.

What is RREF and why is it useful?
